Hy, I just downloaded Debian 2 (Linux 2), finally something easy to download, those redhat, suse things, are they REALLY downloadable? It's a bit anoying that prompt when I worked most of my life with Windows'95-'98-NT. Isn't there a graphical interface for Linux, X or something like that. Is that downloadable too? Well, I'm going to try the linux-euphoria on it, hope it works. Bye, PQ QC ______________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free Email at http://www.hotmail.com

EU>Isn't there a graphical interface for Linux, X or something like that. EU>Is that downloadable too? yes, there's X-Windows. It's not just one GUI, but a standard for graphical interfaces for Linux. There is a really cool X-Windows interface called KDE which you can find at http://www.kde.org. I don't know where you can find the X-Windows server, though, which you will probably need. Jeffrey Fielding JJProg at cyberbury.net http://members.tripod.com/~JJProg/

The web site for X-servers is: http://www.xfree.org Generally, each distribution includes all x-servers. I never tried to download one from the web, I always found CDs with complete distris. I just looked at the debian site (debian.org) and found the packages there, under: http://www.debian.org/Packages/stable/x11/ . you should need the xfree86-common package , the correct xserver for your graphic card, xterm and probably a lot other stuff... Can't you get a CD rather? it contains all packages and an installation program that will help you for the setup. Hy, And what do you do if X-Server is installed, (At least when you think it's installed) how do you start it, is it supposed to start automaticly ? I don't know where to get a Linux-CD here in the Netherlands. And when you finally found that cd, you'd better not got there because of the price. Ever seen how much RedHat 5.0 costs? ($69,95) In dutch guilders, that's something in the F130,- That hurts in your wallet, and I don't have the money. if it is installed, type "startx" to start...X I never bought a linux distribution, there are many magazines that offer one in their CD. This way I got RedHat 4.1, 5.2, Mandrake 5.2 and 6.0, a slackware ... there are also linux CD included with many computing books , some of them offer three different distributions. BTW I don't remember having seen a debian. Don't know why. If you can't find, maybe I can send you such a CD through Physical mail... I'll be in holidays for a month next week so we haven't a lot of time. Patrick: Cheapbytes has a Debian CD for 20.60 guilders, delivery included. The problem with downloading Linux is that there are THOUSANDS of files, and you don't know which ones you need, unless you are Linus Torvalds. When you get a CD, it will have all the files, and as you install, the install program will move the appropriate files from the CD to your hard disk. Most installations automatically set up windows, a window manager, and all the nice stuff you are used to seeing with Windows 9x. Regards, Irv

All this can be installed via ftp -- IF you have a T1 line -- Otherwise, it means several days of downloading. Not worth the bother, for me. On the other hand, you could learn a LOT by installing this way. Maybe more than you really want to learn! Yes, there is a graphical interface. Please take a look at another screenshot, this one in Dutch, just for the fun of it. http://www.mindspring.com/~mountains (click on the "another" screenshot) Regards, Irv

Hy, I almost have it started, but it asked for configuration, so I did that with xf86config, but it still doesn't work with my video card, It's not a problem that my S3-Virge/DX vga card is a PCI card, right? (I'm happy that my AGP card went broke a few days ago, that's not supported at all, right? Or is it?) Is there a standard installation? Patrick Quist: Redhat has a free download at: http://www.redhat.com http://www.redhat.com/download Free copy of Red Hat Linux 6.0: Download it now from either our ftp site or from one of our mirror sites. You can also download the manual or other additional documentation. I don't know how long it would take to download it ? Also go to their home page there is some information about them opening a site in europe. Bernie

It's completely integrated with the web - you can browse local directories, click on folders, connect to the web or an ftp server, and things look just like they do on your local computer (just a little slower). You can even edit and save files over the web (if you have permission and passwords to do so). Also drag and drop files from websites onto your desktop (or the other way around, if allowed). That's what I used to make the desktop jpeg on the website (the one with the circuit board backdrop) Netscape is also available, but it's big, slow, and buggy. Regards, Irv

I used Opera on Windows, and liked it. It was faster than Netscape or Explorer, and had some nice features. It's not nearly ready for the Linux platform, unfortunately. Irv

Short answer: the "K Desktop Environment " = the MS Explorer done right. Long answer: (quote) What is KDE? KDE is a network transparent contemporary desktop environment for Unix workstations. It was written by a world-wide network of software engineers committed to free software development. KDE seeks to fill the need for an easy to use desktop for Unix workstations, similar to the desktop environments found under the MacOS or Window95/NT. We believe that the Unix operating system is the best operating system available today. In fact Unix has been the undisputed choice of the information technology professional for many years.........<snip> I suppose a good place for more info would be http:www.kde.org (be sure to look at the themes) Irv

Hy, Does anyone know a good, working, fast ftp-site of KDE ? I use GoZilla! for downloading and with most of the KDE files are multiple ftp-sites available, but everyone of them give Errors during Transfer. Or if there´s no good site, can someone give a good time to download it. Bye, PQ QC ______________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free Email at http://www.hotmail.com

KDE is much more than an explorer... it is a project that includes a window manager, browser, file manager, editor, and they are also developing a complete office suite (Koffice). A lot of things are integrated, so it is great for the W95-addicts and those who don't want to understand what they do. KDE is not alone on the market, it is only the slowest and uses a lot of memory. (has anyone tried to use StarOffice under KDE with only 32Meg of mem? One alternative is called 'gnome' , a project from the free software foundation . If you just want a window manager, you can try fvwm, afterstep, windowmaker (part from the gnome project), enlightenment, and if you're short in memory (or in download time try icewm. you can find most of these on the debian site too. Hy, I got the file ISAPNP, that´s for configuring PnP ISA Cards, like the ESS PnP Audiodrive. It runs when booting, but it gives an error that the file or dir : /proc/bus/pci/devices And when I try to create the directory bus in /proc/ it´s not posible because of the read-only property which cannot be changed, not even by root. I got also a program that can convert RPM (Redhat) files into DEB (Debian). So if someone can send or give the URL of sndconfig in Redhat, and I'm actually begging for it, I read that it can really make a huge, even for Debian-Linux difference.
