1. CD trouble
Hi all,
I have some trouble shooting with my cd reader and Windoz 95.Until
yesterday, the cd worked fine but suddenly, each time I try to acces the
drive the system warns me about and error on my drive an says that it's
impossible to acces it becouse it's not ready(just like if there was no
cd loaded in the reader).I've looked all trough the control panel trying
to find some sort of device conflict or maybe some corruption of the
driver...but the conflict assistant it's not very helpfull and Win95
says that the device works correctly ?:[
It could have relation with the permanet VxD Panda Antivirus Sentinel i
installed?
any feedback will be apreciated,
regards,
Luis

First thing is to determine if the problem is hardware or software. If you
have a dos driver, try accessing the cd with that. Since windoze and dos
use different drivers, any software problem should show up if it works. if
it does work, try to restore windoze to the state that allowed the cdrom to
work previously. Last resort - reinstall windows from scratch.
If you cant access the cdrom with dos, the problem will probably be
hardware. I have been told that the laser diodes in cdroms and newer cd
players are designed to run 'hot', giving them a useful lifetime of about
three years or less. I believe that most cdroms detect a disk's presence
using the laser. If the interface part of the drive still works, as it
seems it does, and it is reporting the equivalent of no disk in the drive,
and it is more than three years old, I would assume a shot laser. If this
is the case it would be last rites for the drive, as lasers cost as much to
repair as a whole fresh new drive.
No dos driver? contact me at home and I might be able to help...
Cheers,
Nick

A while back, I installed a CD player that lived in the menubar, and I was
unable to access the drive through the desktop icon, it gave me a "drive in
use" type of error. I could run the CDs fine from the player, but couldn't
look at the CD using any other programs (in File Open, etc). There were no
device conflicts, and the device showed it was working OK. I finally removed
the player, and everything was back to normal.
So the problem could easily be caused by another program grabbing the CD
(like your anti-virus stupidly trying to scan it for viruses) and not
letting go.
