Does anybody have any experiance with Callwave software? (A way to take take calls while online.)(Monthly service charge $7.95.) Is this a rip off or works good? How about Radio Shack's Catch-a-Call? ($39.95 one time purchase of a box plus must initiate call waiting with Phone Co. $3.23 per month) What's the best way to go with this? Don Cole SF Go Niners!

Get broadband. A lot of places are offering DSL for $19.95 for the first few months (like Earthlink) and Comcast and Wide Open West have similar offers. I'm not sure what's available in your area, but maybe its worth a shot? It'll free up your phone line 24/7. ~Greg P.S. If you don't want broadband, go with the Catch-a-call. Even if you only use the thing twice a month, it'll pay for itself in 6 months vs Callwave's "service," if you can even call it that. I know people that have tried the software stuff and they tell me it doesn't work well. the best way to deal with that? get DSL or cable internet access. seriously, with so many Americans getting broadband these days -- isn't it up to 40% and growing fast? -- look for those services to fade away. DSL here in Fort Worth, TX, is $26 a month and cable is running some promotion about $19 a month. that's less than <cough> AOL. plus, isn't another physical phone line cheap, too? if you're seriously considering Radio Shack's deal, check out eBay -- i saw their hardware (search "catch-a-call") for $0.01 to $0.99 and up -- no reserve price. -- jon

Cable is (supposed to be) a bit faster, unless you end up with suscom! Some days the speed averages about 3 BYTES per second! Most of the time I get 100-500 kbps though. > > if you're seriously considering Radio Shack's deal, check out eBay -- i saw > their hardware > (search "catch-a-call") for $0.01 to $0.99 and up -- no reserve price. > > > -- > jon >

I get 1.2 MBs (around 160 kbs) and they get 1.5 MBs download, but i get a faster 256 - 348 kbs upload. only thing is, to get internet cable you need to also get cable TV. nah...! one GOOD thing about SBC is that they don't care if you run a (non-commercial) HTTP, FTP, SMTP, etc., server -- but Comcast cable here won't let you. while SBC has allocated billions to build out a fiber optic system to the residential door, my downtown apartment isn't in the mix. nuts. ah, well, i'm happy -- i can remember when v.90 was the speed demon... <smooths down what's left of grey hair> -- jon

Plus $75 a month. But i could run anything i want, however i want. There's dsl in town, but i cannot get a signal out of the valley down there, the equipment would cost even more, and i cannot rent the land nor put up a tall enough tower there. No one is interested in dsl or fences out here, they'd rather blow money on lawyers and court costs. Kat http://TiggrBox.Info
