1. Quick update for the OpenEuphoria website?

Hi everyone, I've been using Euphoria/Phix quite a bit lately and it's still a joy to work with.
To keep the website looking active for newcomers, would it be possible to make two small updates?

Copyright Date: Update the year in the footer to 2026.
Online Manual: Point the online documentation to version 4.1.

It would be a great way to show that the lights are still on.
Thanks for all your work on the infrastructure!

Best regards,
Andreas

I agree. I think Greg is in charge of the overall site? There might be another one. I haven't seen him around in a bit, hopefully he's doing alright.

Do you know if we still have an official euweb repo? That would be the place to raise a pull request.

Right now it's only Greg. He did mention in an earlier thread on this forum that he was getting a Discourse-knowledgble friend to help him migrate the website, but the deadline he set for that came and went already, so not sure what is going on or if that friend is still a going concern for us even.

I don't want to give orders to anyone, but I believe that using Discourse would be bad. I've accumulated unpleasant experiences with that forum software, from a user's point of view. Also, updating the forum made in Euphoria seems more fun.

Greg set me up with server access last week to fix reCAPTCHA. I haven't figured that out yet but I made both these updates in the meantime.

I'm curious to hear more about these experiences before we proceed with a migration. Personally I've never thought it was great but I've also never thought it was awful.

Please elaborate if you can, and the more specific the better. Let's get ahead of any potential issues before they become a big problem.

Also, updating the forum made in Euphoria seems more fun.

I think we have different definitions of fun. The euforum code is very dated. It feels like it was written in 2008 (because it was) and the internet has learned a lot in the last twenty years.

I'm not say we should use all the latest trending frameworks or whatever. But if we want to use something made with Euphoria, we owe it to ourselves to rewrite it for the modern era.

I'm not sure that it matters that the web has advanced a lot.

Most of the 'advances' involve tracking our activities, serving up targeted advertisements, and cluttering web pages with popups.

Which advances are so urgently needed or so desirable that they supersede all efforts to release a new Eu version, or a usable GUI library for Euphoria?

I never said advances. I said, "the internet has learned a lot in the last twenty years."

The internet has learned some good things, like better methods of security, encryption, and authentication.

It's also learned bad things, like how to bypass outdated methods of security, encryption, and authentication.

These things matter to me. I can't keep running a website on nearly twenty year old unmaintained code. I won't.

You're not wrong. The internet is deep into the latest stages of capitalism. I won't have any of that crap around here.

I recommend Firefox with uBlock Origin, Facebook Container, and Privacy Badger. Run Pi Hole or similar DNS blocker at home.

I sense I've struck a nerve and I'm sorry if that's the case. If you want to take anything off my plate I'd be happy to work with you.

And to be honest, I've had a pretty hard time trying to accomplish anything lately and I'm pretty much ready to give up.

9. Re: Quick update for the OpenEuphoria website?

The forum may be ancient 2008 code, but it's usable.

One of the best things, if you compare it to Discord or other language forums, is anyone can read messages without having to go thru a whole series of "sign up" and "verify" steps (i.e. letting someone harvest your email address, name, age, and probably load your computer with a dozen 'cookies').

And unlike some, this forum doesn't rudely cut off discussion the moment anyone drifts off topic or the first time someone submits an answer that (might) work. If the next poster has a better answer, too bad, it's not wanted there.

However, if the euforum is taking up too much of your time trying to keep 'evil-doers' out, then no big deal. There's one on X, which is hardly ever used. https://x.com/OpenEuphoria

From an end-user perspective, sure. But from an admin/moderator perspective, it's all duct tape and bubble gum. Plus I think we deserve something better than simply usable, don't you?

One of the best things, if you compare it to Discord or other language forums,

You know we're talking about moving to Discourse (a free and open source forum platform with some chat-like features) not Discord (a proprietary chat platform with some forum-like features), right?

A lot of programming languages and other open source projects are running their forums on Discourse. Have yourself a scroll through their discovery list.

I created an OpenEuphoria Discord server a long time ago but it gets less use than this forum. I'll probably shut it down once we migrate to Discourse.

irv said...

Discourse doesn't require any kind of identity verification, nor would I select any other platform that had such requirements. I am firmly and loudly (at least in person) against anything of the sort.

The only "anonymous" access I ever want to restrict is anyone trying to harvest our content for training their models. Although lately it's getting harder to separate search engines from other bots and agents.

I would like to see CAPTCHA get replaced by a simple email verification link, and I'd like to encourage everyone to use a password manager and TOTP codes (which are private!) to protect their credentials.

(i.e. letting someone harvest your email address, name, age, and probably load your computer with a dozen 'cookies').

I intend to self-host Discourse just as I am hosting the forum now. The only person with access to any of that data is me. The only cookies you get now are what's necessary to run the site. The same will remain true on Discourse.

I intend to maintain this forum as a place where all are welcome and where we can have open (and civil) discussions. In fact, Discourse has some features that should help with this, like solved topics and trust levels.

FYI, if you find OpenEuphoria on any kind of social platform, it's probably me. I can confirm DEV, YouTube and yes, even LinkedIn are all my doing.

P.S. I'm accepting applications for a Junior Volunteer Social Media Coordinator, if you know anyone looking for a very part time, very unpaid job.

Let me help you with that: JVSMC (actually, you get slightly different answers every time you refresh the page...)

Pretty much what it says on the tin. Somebody who can do short write-ups and post them on the social sites, at my direction, and for very little (zero) pay.
