1. Archive re organisation

Forked from Re: windows 7

useless said...

You know, between micro$oft dropping various support for previous dos/windoze features, and Euphoria growing up to v4 (and dropping dos support), the archives as we have known them for the last 10+ years could be totally obsolete soon.

I feel this should be a topic of some discussion, like what to do about it, if anything. It's going to look really bad when :

1) RDS turns off potential Eu users-programmers because the OS won't let the archived apps run
B) Eu v4+ won't let the archived apps run

useless

I agree.

The RDS archive has kind of outgrown itself, and has not kept up with changes in euphoria, or operating systems. While the RDS archive has been very fit for purpose until now, perhaps it is time for a change.

If there is any interest in updating the archive to a today 'standard' , I would be happy to look at various options and methods of re organising. If there was no interest, obviously, then I would not do anything to upset the applecart, or if anybody else wanted to do it, again I would have no qualms.

2. Re: Archive re organisation

This should be very easy to do. I bet Rob could provide us with a Euphoria database (or some other suitable format) of the archive which can be used in the new web site's backend somewhere. Regardless, when 4.0 is released, I'm sure lots of attention will be focused toward the site. Volunteer applications are being accepted. :)

3. Re: Archive re organisation

A very good point - the archives which were once a big + for euphoria are quickly becoming a negative. And it isn't all the fault of us moving to 4.0, either.

One difficulty I see is that so many people who wrote the original programs are no longer around to update them, and much of the code is not - ahem... all that clear - so that someone else could do the updates.

And some, including most of what I wrote, isn't all that great anyway. Others were written more as tutorials, and they would no longer be applicable to 4.0.

Perhaps we chould start a list of "core apps you can't live without" and see if we can get ?volunteers? to update those. Once a collection of working programs is available, Rob could call the archives "Old stuff you may find interesting".
