The answer is very simple.  If a DNS name does not resolve, then there is 
no DNS entry for it, or the site is down.  Since 
http://harborside.com/whatever still worked, the site was up, so therefore 
there was no DNS entry for http://www.harborside.com/whatever.

As to why there was no longer a DNS entry...  Well, someone probably 
screwed up... Either the DNS entry got removed, or maybe the entry got 
messed up (a typo).
