Inspecting Edit Text Boxes

I am writing a prorgam to maintain client records and wish to read the =
information entered into a edit text and check if it meets certain =
requirements.  if it does not, the focus returns to the edit text.  I =
was wondering what is the most useful way to do this, ie, lose focus or =
some other function
