In fact, you can't even use that (Office integration) as an argument any 
more.  It's really pretty simple to Automate Office apps using EuCOM 
(see the archives).

I think you must be referring to the post about the MicroEconomy.  I 
don't think I'd draw this conclusion.  It's more that virtually every 
app uses some sort of GUI, therefore, *everyone* needs them, and they 
are very popular.  It's just a lowest common denominator across most 
programmers.  OTOH, not everyone needs an elegant little library for the 
Simplex Algorithm, but I just can't help myself but to download and vote 
for cool things like this.
