I'm planning to call it beta-1, rather than alpha-5.

On my machine, sieve is 21% faster.
shell is 12% faster. 
David Cuny's ee is 8.5% smaller.

I didn't specifically target sieve and shell.
Most of the new optimizations don't even affect them.
