For those who did not already know, JPEG stands for joint picture expert group. This is/was a non-profit-making consortium interested in furthering the development of electronic image creation and storage. The group formed a standardised codec based on the cream of the available technology to become an industry standard for efficient image storage. It was in all of their interests for it to become widely available and a de facto standard, so to charge would have been stupid. Code to compress/decompress is readily available if you do a quick web search. GIF on the other hand was aa proprietory standard created by IBM and unisys (I believe compuserve had some involvement too) and they licensed it to other companies for their use. Like all products, it had to be paid for, and they draw no distinction between fat-cat corporations and Euphoria spare-time hobbyist programmers. Their miserlyness spells the doom of the LZW compression algorithm. Oh well, it can go and make friends with Gnuphoria ! Daniel PS Rob what is your position on rigid data structures in Euphoria ? Many times on this list people explain how they would like to have something similar to this, and the thread disappears untouched.
