[WIN] retrieving text from Combo SLE

I'm writing a program that uses a sorted combo box. I'm trying to retrieve the text from the edit box to test whether the typed text is already included in the list. But when I try to get the text, it says length is 0. I'm using getText(). Is this right? If not.. what command should I be using?
