Hi Derek, Thanks for the explanations. <snip> >If, as appears to be the case, in Windows you open a window as either >Normal or Modal, and it stays whichever way you chose until you close it >(which if it works that way is REALLY STUPID), Why is this "REALLY STUPID"? It seems okay to me? What am I missing? </snip> REALLY STUPID because it seems unnecessarily limiting. REALLY STUPID because Linux doesn't hamper you thataway, proving it is not necessary. Need I go on? <snip> I'm still puzzled as to why an application would want to cause a window to behave sometimes as modal and sometimes as normal? Wouldn't this be a bit confusing to the operator? </snip> Perhaps confusing unless the app alerts them to what is happening. My idea was (and is) to print a running log of events to a subsidiary window, and when something "interesting" occurs, to force the user to stop what they're doing and take notice - perhaps by clearing the window and/or writing the logging to a file. I hope this makes sense. If you want the SPECIFICS, when I get the program working to a reasonable degree I may send you a copy for constructive criticism. (The program is complex, and I have limited time to work on it, so development will take some time.) Actually seeing the app in operation would be better than trying to grok a long-winded explanation of the whys and wherefores. Since I am chatting with a friend at the moment using $$$ $$$$$$$$$ (unamed program), I can use this analogy - suppose in addition to just beeping to get my attention when a message is received, the program had an "urgent" mode that forced me to reply to the message before I could do anything else on the Internet.
