Help with linux

I've downloaded eu_engin.zip by Bernie Ryan.
When i try to run the demo program as user i get this error: 
svgalib: Cannot get I/O permissions.
I'm using knoppix 3.3 debian install.
The demo run as fine as root, if someone can give a clue to which file i
should set permisson.
