8x8 graphic characters

Does anyone know how to set the video mode so that when 8x8 fonts are
displayed, they appear without any gap between them? Specifically, I'm
trying to display a redefined character set, but I'm getting gaps between my
characters.

DOS fonts are typically 'hard wired' so certain graphic characters overscan
the 9th column, connecting them to the adjacent font. But I've seen
applications (for example, ScreamTracker and ImpulseTracker) that manage to
display the characters contingiously, without a gap. I suspect that you have
to tweak the VGA mode, but I can't seem to find any information on how to do
this.
