Just another Newbie

To anyone with ideas...

I am just returning to programming (as a hobby now) since leaving the
field just as Win95 was being released.
-don't smirk I am not THAT old <g>-

My programming background is BASIC (QBasic, and GWBasic), Pascal, C+
(not ++), and Assembly (Peter Norton's books). I have only enough idea
of what API calls are to be dangerous, and have never written any code
for a GUI driven OS.

I am looking for suggestions on reading materials, to start getting
myself up to speed in programming again with the most interest in
Windows OSes (however suggestions for the Linux world are also
apreciated, especially RedHat). I am looking for materials that are
either/both for the impatient (ie "Euphoria Programming for Dummies"
would be great if there were such a publication) and for the serious
programmer (ie. "The Guts of Windows API calls for the Overly
Intellectual yet Socially Challenged")

Any and all comments are apreciated.
Michael

P.S. If my attempts at humor have offended you please accept an
insomniacs appologies
