Heya Thomas! > I seem to have hit a problem...................sort of like > Mr.Poe----only with more 0's and 1's. Poetic, very poetic :) > Here's the situation, I've been programming with Euphoria since last > summer, and I *thought* by now, I could make some type of "game" Naw, it took me forever before I actually started making a program halfways-well. I've been working on Euphoria since the tail end of the 1.* series (Late '97?), I tried making a DOS-based databasing program to organize all the damn M:TG sets coming out at the time, based on guru but that fell through when I saw Magic Suitcase... Now i'm up to my elbows in making a program for Windows that automates making a certain type of file for a game :) Took me, what, 3 years before I started making a big program? > (erase all stereotypes of beginner programmers trying to make quake > 4). (those get irritating) > I knew it was a ****long**** process to get anything done, heck, > at first I couldn't figure out puts(). Took me a couple weeks to get puts() working for myself, but then thats about all I did... > But, the only working game I've > made is Hangman, with text graphics, Better than anything I've tried to do :) > I'm working on a Western > Stand-off game, but I need the registered version to finish it 'cause > it's so long. Not necessarily. I've got this program i'm workin on that flakes out once in awhile in the code, but when it does, its not that hard to track down, despite the 2,000+ lines of code... > But, there's that whole problem of being 15 and not > having a credit card to order, but never mind that. Then perhaps you can send Rob cash/check/MO? And for money, well, do what I'll do: get a job :-\ > So......... > > 1) Have I just got a long way to go? Yes. Yes.... > 2) Am I missing some commands essential to games? If you can lookup the manual and get things working correctly after you read it, and you can ask for help, I don't think this is it... > 3) Is there a game programming tutorial somewhere in that great big > binary in the sky? Nope. You're on your own with Euphoria, however there are plenty of libraries available to help you on your journey. Particularly I'm keeping an eye on all the 3d stuff like Morfit, and the DX and OGL wrappers people are working on :) 4) Should I plug away at ABGTE2 for a couple > months? If I remember right thats painfully out of date, but it still teaches some basic concepts. Never helped me tho :) > All I want is a cheesy side scroller, no, a tank game. It's hard to be > creative in DOS with text graphics. I'm sure you've all been here at > one point, so, any advice? Try, RTFM, plug away, and don't be afraid to ask questions. (I don't do the RTFM part, but don't take my example :)) A fellow 15-year old, (almost 16, whee!) --"LEVIATHAN"
