There are a lot of complicated issues 
in displaying forum messages. I'd be very reluctant to 
start messing around with it again.
Basically everything is inside a big PRE ... END PRE 
HTML section, so the line breaks specified by the author
are maintained. I think that simplifies things a lot,
especially on a programming forum.
I'm sorry if it is inconvenient for some people, 
especially those with eyesight limitations.
