It depends what you are talking about... There are many many different file formats, each with their own layout. There is .xyz, which is human readable, but limited... There is .bsp and .mdl, which are used by the Quake and RTCW games There are .pov files, which are used by Pov-ray Almost all of the 3d tools have their own format. If you are making your own program, you can even make your own format. The easiest and simplest is the .xyz format, but it is very limited - I don't think that texturing is possible, or grouping.
