The real reason I did it was for debuging purposes. It allows me to have a routine called when a program crashes that will dump all variables into a file. Others might really want to pass 'pointers' to variables--there are advantages and disadvantages to this, and its been discussed here in the past. You can also create variables on the fly (I know Kat has asked about this feature), although this is still somewhat buggy (it causes problems with some subsequent routine_id/variable_id calls).
