hi Aaron
just as it was already said it will take years to accomplish your goal. 
a whole team works on those big attractive games.

starting small and learning basics and methods that you would use in the 
future is the way to go, always building on what you already know.
you have decisions to make now that affect your goal.
try cartoon scenes first, then create a animated scene.
turn them into 3d later. then interact with user etc...

also a BIG decision: do you want to be the one to program the tools 
needed in your goal or be the one to apply the tools?
an artist does not make the brushes or paints or canvas, but spends time 
learning to apply those tools to express himself/herself.

learning how the data is created and stored efficiently is also needed 
knowledge.  sure it is not seen by the user or as glorified but a need 
ed piece of your goal or any big project.
i have not started any graphics programming yet either.
but do check out: povray.org and an addon moray. it is a 3d rendering 
program.
