Don't know if anything can be done about the slow data connection.
I use 100Mbps fast ethernet cards in my home lan, so I don't really see any
difference between local and network transactions.

Not just you. The most stable and easiest to set up complete
Linux distribution, in my opinion, is SuSE, followed by Mandrake
(if you're using Pentiums) and then Slack. Didn't like Red Hat at all, and
I've heard the same thing from others.
