Best bet if anyone starts experiencing catastrophic spyware issues:
Backup and re-install windows, download SP2, and keep it updated. I
did this several weeks ago and I haven't had any spyware issues. I
know SP2 isn't on everyone's to-do list, but I personally have had no
issues with it. SP2 even includes a built-in popup blocker for
Internet Explorer!

Also, making yourself a normal user, and not an Administrator really
helps prevent those nasty spyware programs from installing themselves.

Both are good, and AVG makes an anti-virus that can catch most of the
trojans and auto-downloaders that Ad-Aware and SpyBot-S&D miss. Just
be sure to update at every opportuntity!
