I never found out what the cause was. One computer and floppy and drive 
was *new*, the first and only ibm-clone computer i ever bought assembled by 
someone else (it was a great price, the 300Mhz cpu prices were starting to 
drop). I saw the floppy work there before i paid for it in town. The floppy
never
did work here. Maybe it's because of the microwave antenna farm across the 
valley?
