Yeah, I looked at the source and it all looked good.  I just can't tell someone
unconditionally to go and use a wrapper without having actually tried it out :) 
I definitely intend to when time permits.

I've had a look at wrapping OGG, but I still don't understand the file format
that well, so it would have been hard to test.  OGG is certainly very easy to use
and has some advantages over MP3 (like more channels for a start).

With that and LAME is should be easy enough to create an alternative to BASS. 
Er.... FreeBASS? smile
