Three mailing lists I've had positive experiences with are Freelists, Yahoo Groups, and Google Groups. Google Groups is especially nice, but all three work better than Topica. I have not been able to get mail from Topica in ages. My ISP thinks anything from Topica is spam, and blocks it. I've occasionally had similar problems with Yahoo Groups. I've never had any problems with Google Groups or Freelists (save for some downtime at Freelists).
