Just when you thought it was safe to open email again, the first serious
computer virus outbreak of 2004 is ripping through the Internet at
record pace.

The new worm is called both MyDoom and Novarg. It's a variant of a
familiar foe, the Mimail worm that wreaked havoc in 2003.

Tonight on "Tech Live" we have a full update, including a look at why
this new, fast-spreading virus is raising such serious concern from
computer-security experts.

Security firm Sophos has now published instructions for removing the
virus, which harvests email addresses and also opens a back door that
could allow an attack to control infected PCs.

'The next big one'

Late Monday, Central Command's Emergency Virus Response Team confirmed
more than 3,800 infections of Worm/MyDoom less than 45 minutes after the
worm's initial discovery. Network Associates reported 19,500 email
messages bearing the virus from 3,400 unique Internet addresses.
Emphasizing the seriousness of the virus, Symantec has rated MyDoom as a
4 out of 5, or "Severe."

The early extensive distribution for this virus has security firms
making dire predictions. Central Command released a statement Monday
afternoon warning that MyDoom could top the Sobig worm in a matter of
days. In 2003 Sobig tore through computer systems, in some cases
knocking businesses offline, shutting down airline reservation systems,
and causing other related computing headaches.

"Unfortunately, initial reports of Worm/MyDoom have already surpassed
the other new releases in a matter of minutes," said Central Command's
Steven Sundermeier, vice president of products and services. "The
alarming rate of submissions closely mimics that of later variants of
[the Sobig, or Mimail worm]. This has all the characteristics of being
the next big one."

Don't open it

MyDoom/Novarg affects Windows 95/98/Me/NT/2000/XP. It spreads through
email, and security firm Central Command lists its characteristics as
follows.

Subject: Varies, but some observed subjects include: "Test," "test," and
"Status"

Body: Varies, but some observed body messages include: "The message
cannot be represented in 7-bit ASCII encoding and has been sent as a
binary attachment." "Mail transaction failed. Partial message is
available." Or, "test."

The email message also comes with an attachment, the title of which also
varies. Some observed attachments include the following.

document.zip
document.pif
doc.scr
message.pif
readme.exe
file.zip
message.zip
oia.zip
text.zip

Once MyDoom infects a computer, it also lists itself in any shared KaZaA
files on your PC, disguised under the following names.

winamp5
icq2004-final activation_crack
strip-girl-2.0bdcom_patches
rootkitXP
office_crack
nuke2004

Bitter over Linux?

On Monday, security firms were working feverishly to determine what
MyDoom's encrypted payload contained.

Antivirus agencies are now warning that the worm may trigger a
distributed denial-of-service attack aimed at SCO, a Utah software
company embroiled in a bitter legal dispute over ownership of Linux. The
attack could come between Feb. 1 and Feb. 12, according to Sophos.

SCO is claiming rights to specific code in the open-source software, and
the company says it has been targeted with denial-of-service attacks
from disgruntled Linux supporters in the past. So far no DOS attack has
come as the result of an email virus.
