you don't seem to want the programmers documentation that helps in future
software updating.  Are you refering to a user's manual by chance?

i would write program code or user's manual as if i were writing to a
great grandparent who never seen a computer.
in outline form to start with, followed by more detail.
let someone else try to follow it and write down their questions.
maybe the format could even be in question answer format.
