I'll download Open Watcom 1.4 tomorrow and see what happens.
And maybe someone else with Open Watcom 1.4 can try the
multitasking release and let us know if:
   ecw -wat taskwire 
   emake
produces a usable .exe file.
It's probably something minor, since, as you say,
2.5 official works fine.
