Be sure to use proper case and sign in as root.  

IF you are in the directory :

 /usr/lib 


THEN you need to use the command:

ln -s libX11.so /usr/X11R6/lib/libX11.so.6

IF you are in the directory :

 /usr/X11R6/lib

THEN you need to use the command:

  ln -s libX11.so /usr/X11R6/lib/libX11.so.6


 You were trying to set the link backwards.
