Modem type - internal / external / pci or isa (pci modems rarely use jumpers (I
am saying rarely)), and are often (and I am saying often) winmodems.

Modems are a pain under linux - if possible use an external one - much simpler
to get working.

Best help for winmodems is at (from memory) www.linmodems.org - has some drivers
and advice for kernel compiles for some models of winmodem.

Also check your mgetty - this can sometimes muck things up.
