I don't know what's wrong, but here are
some random points that might you or others:

- if exu does not find an EUDIR variable,
   it will try to use your HOME variable,
   as if you had set EUDIR=$HOME/euphoria

- always remember to log out and log in again
   after changing your .profile or whatever

- I'm not sure if .profile is where you should
   set up EUDIR. I'm using .bash_profile

- be careful that you are not running the
   ed editor that's a standard part of Linux.
   (It doesn't sound like you are)

- remember to export EUDIR and PATH
   (it looks like you are doing that)

- if you are putting the Euphoria include directory
   in some public place, be sure that the files are
   all readable by you
