Tile Engine

I want to thank everyone that responded to my "trig" question (a while 
back)
The problem is solved (without trig)
That was for a game I am working on and now I am up against another 
obstacle:
the tile engine. I plan on making this a 2D isometric tile based game.
I realy dont know how to handle a tile system internally. I dont want 
this
to be just a grid based tile engine but unless I can figure out an 
alternative,
that's how it will have to be. If anyone can offer insight, ideas, and/or
assistance for this project let me know.
