Irv and Derek, I made a mistake and launched the program from mike-nz's editor. We know it locks it up there. I launched it from a dos window and the modem did not lock up even when I pushed the button to shellExecuteEx the next program. So it would seem to me there is a problem with the system_exec() in EU which the shellExecuteEx() does not exibit. This is what mike-nz uses. Remember this problem with system_exec also locks up my whole computer when the monitor goes to sleep. I'll try that with this short program which uses shellExecuteEx...right chancey since it corrupts my desktop usually...
