Last time I looked, I found a list of over 1,700 languages. 

A large number of these are probably useless: either designed 
to solve a very specific problem, and unsuited for anything 
else, or the result of someone's master's thesis in CS, theoretically 
sound, but unbearably slow. 

There's always a chance that a truly outstanding language has been 
developed, and no one but the author has tried it. It would be a shame 
to overlook something like that.
