Some DOS editors busy-wait for input.  To find out if your editor does 
this, start it while watching CPU utilization.  If your editor is 
chowing CPU cycles in the background of the program you launch from it, 
your performance will be degraded.  (Just an idea... I might be 
misinterpreting your problem.  If so, please give more details and/or an 
example.)
