For those who have gotten Linux and X running:
Download a copy of FileRunner.

It's a very useful utility, but that's not the point of this
posting. Take a look at the way FileRunner handles configurations.
This system takes Windows' INI arrangement to a whole new level,
and may be worth copying for your own programs.
