Beginner seeks help

Hello,  I'm very new to this and require help with a simple problem.

How do I write numbers (as in -1000,256,1.384,-4.2) to a file and read them
back later as numbers (as in my earlier definition)?

I must be missing something, do I have to go through all the effort of
converting to binary and back again?

A text file would be preferred, but is not absolutely necessary.
