There was an 'LGPL' developed for libs. You can build anything on top of a GPLd lib and keep the source to your self. It's when you modify the library itself (and distribute it) that you must start distributing sourcecode, but only to the library. And, as always, you can take a GPLd program and modify it for your own use all you like, and if you don't distribute it, you don't have to give anyone sourcecode.
