Try http://tiger.census.gov ?

I remember one map service would search it's database for features (like
negative elevations would generally be underwater) or shoreline, or such, and
returned lat/long, elevation, placename, etc .

Luckily, i mined http://geography.state.gov before they went to ActiveX and
Flash! You could possibly plot the hemisphere, and place a dot at every
lat/long for the named places, the resulting blobs will will look like the
continents. If you filter to usa names, the blob will look like the usa. Problem
with this approach is that it's about 2 gigabytes of data,, i can't email it to
you.
