Hi,
Paint doesn't save the bitmaps with a set pallete, it can use any
pallete, the only limitation is that you cannot have more than 256
unique colors in your image.

I suggest saving the image as a 256 color bitmap *before* you start
work on it, Paint should then constrain you to the allowed colors.

If you really need to reduce the amount of colors used by an image
then don't use paint, it's spectacularly bad at this job. Use
something like Adobe Photoshop or Jasc Paint Shop Pro...
