Hrm. I got this behavior when I created a bad boot disk (it didn't pass the
verification stage), but tried to use it anyway. It filled up the screen
with .?.?.?.?.?.?.?...

I'd guess it's trying repeatedly to access a sector on the disk, but
failing.
