Gene, Haven't looked at your game yet, but I like your little steam engine, and especially your little cartoon of how a steam engine works. From it I ca= n sorta see how an interest in designing/building mechanical gadgets and programming are related: the differing radii of the power crank and the control one (eccentric?) creates a kind of "timing loop" to allow the pis= ton to receive pressure and to exhaust at the right times. I realized that w= hen I noticed the two rod assemblies (power & control) were moving at differe= nt speeds, even though they were both attached to same wheel, & wondered how that was done, & then I saw that the eccentric and the crank had differen= t radii. But in order to create that solution, a mechanical designer had t= o think in very much the same way as a programmer: what's the problem, what= 's the general idea of a solution, & what's a way to implement the general solution. Neat. You might find this site of some interest, http://www.geocities.com/CapeCanaveral/Hall/3551/ it belongs to a *master* Italian clockmaker, Carlo G. Croce, & I found it after I saw a TV program about John Harrison & "his lifelong effort to wi= n the =A3 20,000 prize put at stake by the Board of Longitude for a clock a= ble to determine the longitude of a ship at sea with a maximum error of thirt= y nautical miles after a six weeks trip." The show was fascinating, and so are Carlo's clocks.
