I thought I should clarify for our friends in Brazil, UK, Australia etc...

At one time Virginia and West Virginia were one State.
During the Civil War West Virgina broke away from the State of Virginia.
The people in West Virginia so hated the people in Virginia that they 
would say "West (By God) Virginia" to accent the point that they were 
a different State than Virginia.

More recently John Denver , who is (was) from Colorado ,wrote a bad 
song about West Virginia.
