Sometime in the very early eighties -make it twenty years ago- I set up = an x86 system (don't ask me exactly what it was, but I remember that a = few months later we had the server upgraded to a fantastic 10 MHz). You = said RAM? Must have been all of 2 MB. It consisted of one network server and at least a dozen workstations, = running SCO Xenix. It helped run the administrative section of a health = care company, from patient histories to bank accounts. I used the server = as my main operating and developing station, running the first Informix = IDE (text mode, no X Window yet). So once I tried to test its limits. First I set up some heavy tasks on = all of my twelve alternate consoles (Ctrl-F1 to Ctrl-F12). Then, on one = of them, from my Bourne shell (ancestor of bash, meaning 'Bourne-again = shell') I ran the IDE. From the IDE I shelled out to a second shell. = >From that second shell I opened a new instance of the IDE, and .. you = got the idea. It didn't even flicker. The priting tasks went on, = compilations took maybe ten percent longer than usual, and so on. And all twelve running workstations on the network never noticed...
