I can't comment on vmware but you should give virtualbox a try. I only
discovered it yesterday and thought I'd try installing XP on my Ubuntu laptop.

Wow! this is very slick and amazingly easy to set up. One-click install, a
couple of minutes to set up the virtual machine (I allocated half of my 512Mb of
RAM) using the wizards, pop in the CD, and 40 minutes later I had a fully
functioning XP system running. Very impressive.
