Ah, Euphoria in the console gaming environment. Now that's an idea... I = think I could crank out a few good games on my own if I had a = Euphoria-based development kit for a console. But honestly, despite some of the advantages, I just don't see the = language offering enough to a high-power game developer to make it = worthwhile. If most of their code is going to be in tweaked assembler or = modified microcode to squeeze as much out of the machine as they can = (and for a large gaming house, it likely will), why bother with such a = high-level interface for any other minor portions of the game? And I = would think the smaller developers would try as much as they could to = keep up with the "big boys"... it just sounds like a hard sell. Hmmm... this does give me another idea though... **<brainstorm>** Has anyone else on the list ever heard of an RPG-maker? Software that = let's you produce your own RPGs? I've looked for some on the web, but = only found a couple, and they didn't look like what I wanted. What about = writing one in Euphoria? If it was geared to the Euphoria community, it = could simplify the coding, and would also make the engine a lot more = powerful; their could be "hooks" so users (programmers writing the RPGs) = could write their own functions for certain tasks or special effects if = they wanted, or to allow the engine to be extended. Of course, a simple version geared toward the general computer-using = populace should also work well enough, and might help get the language = greater publicity in the gaming community (at least if given away, with = Euphoria source code....) I think I have a new project to add to my to-do-sometime-soon list. The name is just fine as it is. 2. Why try to compete for already occupied space when there is lots of untouched area out there? 3. Get away from trying to copy C, Basic, Java, Python, et al, ad = nausium ad infinitum --- this stuff goes on forever! What I am trying to say here is that there is opportunity sitting = outside the door, begging for attention. Windows as the Great Monolithic is starting to show plenty of cracks, and so is its partner in crime, = Intel. Wake up! For Example, take a look at what Toshiba and Sony are doing = with that new machine with its equally funny-sounding cpu 'Emotion Engine'. = I am talking about the Playstation2 which can operate at the rate of 6.2 gigaflops (that 6.2 Billion floating-points per second) bringing this = box into super computer status. This thing is a gamer's dream, needs a OS, = and currently does not have any programming language for it that normal = people can relate to. The company is spending a billion dollars just on fabricating the chip. It has to eat up a lot more territory than just being thumb-candy. I think there is plenty of opportunity here for all = of you who can see the advantages of being there first. thanks norm
