How Do They Do It?

Hopefully somebody here knows...

How does a word processing application, such as Microsoft Word or WordPerfect
or OpenOffice, display the text? Is that in a rich edit control? Or is it a
custom control? Or something else? I'm guessing custom control, but I don't
know for sure.
