It's a programming challenge based on a number of rules :)

What's the alternatve ... count the occurance of "words" in a text file 
and output "some" results.  The fastest is the winner ... but the actual 
results aren't "that" important?

I'm not actively participatig in the contest ... but I see this is a 
major part of the contest.  

In "the real world" programmers don't get exact specs of input / output 
expected.  Much has to be interpretered by the programmer.

In "the real world" if you waited for full specs from the client with no 
ambiguities you would never start writing a program.
