Once again, I got Bernie's reply, but never got Doug's question.
Checking via the web interface, I see I've gotten 2/3 of the 
messages posted today.

Anyway, my solution to the kinds of problems Doug is experiencing
it to simply re-load from the CD.  Since my user space is on a 
separate partition from the system stuff, I don't lose any work. 
Like Bernie,  I don't want to have to mess with configuration files.
More often than not, I wind up 'fixing' the wrong thing : )
