I haven't checked it by myself, but it is easy to detect OS of
a server - from service banners (HTTP/SMTP..) and by examining
TCP stack behavior (nmap is a great tool for this www.insecure.org)

That's manufactor's fault he doesn't supply Linux driver and people have
to hack their own.

We can't judge everything by it's commercial success. Bill Gates is not neither
a great programmer nor a visionary. He just knows well how to sell someone
others
ideas. Apple,Xerox->Windows, Mosaic->Explorer, (can't remember)->Excel, The
Messegner
etc.
